The Dead Ferry |
|
|
It takes three City agencies to bury our indigent and dispossessed dead. The Department of Hospitals releases the bodies to the Department of Transportation, who supply the ferryboat, which transports the bodies to Hart Island, where they are interred; eighteen per grave (six down, three across), by prisoners, who are lent by the Department of Corrections. The ferry boat, Cosgrove (above), departs City Island en route to Hart Island (so-called "Potter's Field") in the background. |
